Mobility hubs are a fairly recent development. The concept is to provide an integrated suite of of mobility services—from transit to bike share to parking along with wayfinding and urban design enhancements.
Sacramento’s e-mobility concept takes the mobility hub one step further by adding the infrastructure and support services to encourage every vehicle to be electric instead of running on fossil fuel. It includes charging stations for a variety of vehicles, energy storage, and amenities that can enhance the community.
ABS was awarded the contract to build Sacramento's e-mobility hub to offer zero-emissions transportation to underserved neighborhoods in December 2020.
ABS was selected for this project based on its vast experience within the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) ecosystem. As a design-build contracting firm, ABS has an impressive resume of clients over the last 20+ years delivering projects of this nature. ABS also “owns & operates” a robust network of publicly accessible electric vehicle chargers throughout the State of California acting as a critical component of the state's electrification goals, and roadmap.
Green Technical Education and Employment (Green Tech), ABS’ client, is a community-based, non-profit organization charged with providing quality workforce skills, education, and health strategies to maintain sustainable communities.
“One of the major problems we have is transportation to our programs,” said Simeon Gant, executive director of Green Tech Education, which has two training centers in Oak Park and one in Del Paso Heights. Its programs help train students in clean energy technology, construction, sustainability, utilities, manufacturing, and other fields.
The e-mobility hub was the first of its kind in California, featuring a direct-current electric car fast charger (DCFC) and Level 2 chargers for electric vehicles, which are available for free to residents who qualify. The space will also be a transit hub for an electric bus and ride-hailing service for the neighborhood, according to the plans submitted to the city. The e-mobility hub took what was a blighted empty lot and turned it into an aesthetically pleasing and landscaped area that serves the community, Gant said.
The beautifully landscaped e-mobility hub includes a 12-car surface parking lot, with room for electric busses to make stops, free WIFI, electrified benches, electrified bike racks, and an area for food trucks.
ABS completed the project in Q2 2021.
